Living the values

Living the Values

I was asked to present to The Corporate Association for Professional Development Seminar (CAPD) in December and had a great time. I ran a 2 hour interactive session called “Living the Values” which was based on our work at Jyske bank which is the second-largest publicly-owned bank in Denmark.

We spent some time discussing the rules of constraint which many organisations impose in an attempt to get people to behave in a way they want them to. For example, one large company we know recently ruled that all staff had to get air travel signed off by a director in an attempt to reduce costs. So when a manager in the UK needed to visit his staff in Germany he had to approach a director to sign off his £20 Easyjet flight, yet there were no restrictions on him booking a rather expensive hotel!

At Jyske Bank staff are encouraged to treat the banks money as if it were their own, to act upon common sense when spending. No one flies business class and everyone (including Excellerate) travels at cost, seeking out the best and cheapest deals.

At the seminar we discussed how it would be in the delegate’s organisations if they had no rules? Fear of what could happen caused the most anxiety. For example, staff may spend all the money, take advantage of the company, but we agreed that only a minority of people would do this. We then went on to play the values game which is a great way of checking out how individuals react to morale company dilemma’s and whether organisation and people values are aligned!

The question now is dare you live the values where you are?

*        Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it.

*        Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

*        Begin it now!

And the seminar feedback speaks for itself; “Thank you so much for such a terrific, engaging and enjoyable session. All the feedback has been very positive”. Alan Magolis, CAPD.
