People often say to us, "I didn't know you did that!" so here's a quick update on a current project that might interest you. Management Development We're talking to a number of companies about management development programs, including an electronics manufacturer and a cosmetics company. One of the problems we hear about often - and it's not new - is that people who are promoted for their technical skills struggle to acquire the 'soft' skills of people management. These skills are often called 'soft' because they don't appear to be measurable in the way that financial targets and deadlines can be. Another client recently told me that at a household products and pharmaceutical company, he was targeted and measured on how much he cared about his team. So, yes, we do run large scale management development programs, and yes, we do actually deliver what you want from managers, not only what they are measured on. |
Chris Walker writes... The Rewards of Coaching Working with people in teams and as a business leaders we often speak, sometimes glibly about the importance of mentoring, developing and/or coaching as a means of making our organisations more performant. Many people have the skills inherently necessary to coach others, but recognising what those skills are, can significantly enhance results. In my own experience learning about best practice coaching techniques meant that my "toolbox" as a coach was more comprehensive and I was able to extend my coaching to a larger group of people. Managers are driven by lots of different factors with self actualisation usually being one of the most important, and recognition for your input can be very satisfying. One of my coachees recently wrote to me thanking me for helping them to make a difficult work relationship better, they said, "It made me realise how big a mentor you are for me and I really appreciate that!" Imagine how good that made me feel. The benefits are there for the asking with the right knowledge...
All of the images that you can see on the excellerate website have a special message.
There's a lot of pressure to blend in, to keep your opinions to yourself, to be part of the culture, to do things 'the way we do things round here'. One of the reasons that companies work with external consultancies like us is that we're not tied to the culture. We can think the unthinkable and achieve the impossible. The surprise is - so can you.
